Most Frequently Asked Questions By U.S. Exporters
(ADVICE FROM AN EXPERIENCED FREIGHT FORWARDER)
Air or Ocean Freight?
As a freight forwarder, it is my job to check for the best rate and make sure exporters are aware of all potential expenses. As a result, the client is able to do a thorough cost analysis of all viable options. For instance, if ocean freight is the choice, then we need to consider container and break bulk (LCL) options.
Does an Exporter need a license to Export to foreign countries?

In general, an export license is not required by most countries, but there are exceptions. Obviously, requirements vary with every country, but an experienced freight forwarder should be able to advise exporters as to the best approach.
What does an Exporter need to know about Consular Documents?
Some countries require cargo to be inspected before shipment, while others also require additional consular work. These requirements can usually be satisfied in Houston provided there is a consular office for that particular country, otherwise in Washington D.C.
What other security issues does an Exporter need to be aware of?
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements are becoming more strict. Cargo air freight on passenger carriers is not an easy option anymore. By next year, all air freight will have to be x-rayed.

Export shipping from the United States can seem to be relatively simple to an unexperiened exporter. Yet, a knowledgeable and experienced freight forwarder is undoubtably your best choice for success.

The first important consideration for most U.S. Exporters is whether to ship by air or oceangoing vessel. Since 911, this question has become much more complex. Besides typical factors such as weight, size, and timing, security issues are now paramount.
